Physical appearance plays a very important role in people’s life. We always strive to look our best on a daily basis. But there are certain parts of our body that we don’t like. Sometimes people find their eyes too small, or their ankles too chubby. Many people resort to cosmetic surgery either to perfect their flaws or mimic their favorite celebrity. In fact, Cosmetic Surgery is a growing trend with a large number of people opting for the same.
One of the most popular types of cosmetic surgery is the Rhinoplasty also known as nose surgery or nose job. Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape the nose. The surgery aims to make the nose larger or smaller; change the angle of the nose, alter the tip of the nose; or to correct the bumps and other defects in the nose. This is a surgery that can be done either under general or local anesthesia which would require a one night stay at the hospital. Here’s what should be considered before getting a Rhinoplasty nose surgery.
It’s always best to take at least 7-10 days off because bruising and swelling post-surgery is something that different people deal with differently. The bruising and the swelling decrease when the patient reduces the use of aspirin and all non-steroid anti-inflammatories.
Bruising and swelling are variables that affect each person differently. The key to deal with bruising and swelling is to keep the head elevated and minimize activities. The bruising and swelling occur over the first 3-5 days but is likely to disappear off by the 7-10th day. Apply cold compressor or ice gel on the eyes. Don’t wear glasses for 3-4 weeks. Patients can use contacts 2-3 days after surgery.
It is very important not to start exercising for at least 3-4 weeks post. This is because increased heart rate above 100 may cause increased swelling, bruising and bleeding.
It is normal for most patients to experience discomfort. The patient is also likely to experience bruising and stuffiness the first few days. In order to prevent the bones from moving after surgery and to control the swelling, the patient will have to wear a splint over their nose for at least a week. On the basis of the results, additional bandages would be required for at least a few days.
Rhinoplasty procedure deals with either the correction or preservation of Nasal airway. Sometimes the Nasal support for the nasal airway can be compromised during the procedure hence creating breathing difficulties or a feeling of congestion.
In the visit consultation after the operation, the physician will remove the inner and outer splint depending on the patient’s recovery. It is possible for the patient to experience discomfort after during the removal of the inner splint so it is best to take some pain medication before the visit. Swelling can occur post the removal of the splint; use saline solution to tend to the swelling. Avoid driving and it is best to bring someone along for the first post-operation consultation.
After the splint is removed the nose will look good but the total result of the surgery can only be seen within a year. A significant amount of the swelling should disappear in the first 4-6 weeks after the surgery but the swelling will completely disappear within 12 months of the surgery. The tip of the nose is likely to be numb and swollen for the first six months which is normal. Ensure to keep these pointers in mind before you make a decision.Authored By Dr Vivekananda Bhat -cosmetic surgeon, Bangalore
