Methods Used For Hair Transplantation

Date :27-Feb-2019

Methods used for hair transplantation which have evolved recently provide results that recreate a fuller, more natural-looking hairline. Today, it’s possible to have natural-looking results thanks to many advances in technology. Not only men face hair loss and balding issues, but many women are also troubled by thinning hair as well. And they are increasingly turning to hair loss/ hair transplant procedures to rejuvenate their look. So how, exactly, do hair transplant procedures work?

Many of them have no idea what a hair transplant is

Below mentioned are few things a hair transplant is not - in no particular order

  • Taking another person’s hair and attaching it to your scalp.
  • Shaving off the hair from one part of your head and glueing it back on thing parts of your scalp.
  • Take out hair from another part of your body and reattaching it to your head.

These may look reasonable assumptions from (mostly) intelligent friends about what a hair transplant entails. But, it is not. In fact, Hair “transplant” is a big word.

Simply put, Hair transplants are cosmetic procedures where a person’s own hair is transplanted from one area of the head (donor area) to another (recipient area).

Methods used for hair transplantation:

Provided that hair fall affects both the genders, the recent innovations in hair transplant has come to the rescue. There are two techniques of hair transplant used predominantly, one is called the follicular unit transplant (FUT) and another one is follicular unit extraction (FUE).

The FUT technique:

Also known as ‘strip surgery’ or FUSS (Follicular Unit Strip Surgery), the classic “Follicular Unit Transplantation” or FUT procedure, the doctor first identifies an area, typically at the back of your head and it is surgically removed which minimizes the possibility of transaction or damage to the donor's hair. This is then trimmed into individual follicular units under microscopes and they are made up of naturally occurring groups of hairs, a small muscle, sebaceous (oil) glands, nerves and rarely fine vellus hairs, are transplanted. With each unit measuring around 1mm in width, transferring the unit altogether in this way is thought to help hair growth once transplanted.

Modern FUT techniques are considered as an advancement of older hair transplant techniques which used larger grafts, and often gave noticeable and ‘pluggy’-looking results. FUT transplantation allows thousands of grafts to be transplanted in a single session, resulting in a more natural-looking effect for the patient. A successful FUT means the new grafts should mimic normal hair growth patterns and be virtually unnoticeable.

FUE procedure:

FUE (“Follicular Unit Extraction or excision”) is also referred to as follicular unit transplantation has created a tremendous amount of buzz in the hair transplant industry and is seen to be gaining momentum in recent times. FUE is a sophisticated, minimally-invasive hair transplant method which allows for the harvesting of individual follicles from the back and sides of the head (donor area) without a scalpel or stitches, and consequently leaves no linear scar( like in FUT).

The robotic, hair transplant system NeoGraft facilitates the harvesting of follicles during Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplantation, spectacularly improving the accuracy and speed over previously used manual extraction methods. Different from the previous hair transplantation procedures, the FDA-cleared NeoGraft FUE system is really precise and non-invasive.

The automated NeoGraft FUE hair transplant system is able to quickly and painlessly remove the hair follicles from the back of the head(where it’s genetically programmed not to fall out) and implant them into balding areas. Your surgeon will determine and program the location of removal of the follicles and where to implant them. The NeoGraft FUE machine uses a controlled pneumatic pressure (suction) to get the graft efficiently, so there is no pulling or twisting (as with forceps). This is why an increasing number of persons are taking advantage of the benefits of no-scalpel/no-stitch NeoGraft FUE hair transplants. Because the NeoGraft transplant is faster than other old-fashioned and conventional methods, the grafts can be re-implanted faster which keeps the follicles more lively and robust with minimal pain and less downtime.

Results depend largely on the surgeon you select-

While these advancements (both FUT and FUE) giving patients natural-looking results, the outcome still depends largely on the surgeon you select. The guesswork and manual labour of earlier conventional hair transplant procedures are replaced with robotic speed and precision in these methods. When it comes to hair transplant, there isn’t just one treatment that’s best for all heads. Different procedures address different problems. This is why it’s really important to consult an experienced surgeon before you choose a hair treatment that’s best for you. Moreover, NeoGraft hair transplants require skill and an eye for aesthetics. For an experienced NeoGraft technician this is more than just a medical procedure - they can create something akin to a work of art.
